Due to its topography the country is roughly split into the northern and southern parts. There are large valleys such as the Chui-valley (where the capital Bishkek is situated), and the Talas-valley, and the lake Issyk-Kul The Kyrgyz also name the lake "The Blue Pearl of the Tien-Shan" or "Sea of the Kyrgyz" in the north of the country.
The name "Tien-Shan Mountains" mean «Celestial Mountains» from Chinese. It proved with two highest peaks that located here: Pobeda Peak (Victory Peak) with an altitude of 7439 m and the Khan-Tengri with 6995 m above sea level. Victory Peak is the most northern peak which located on the height more than 7000m above sea level. People usually start to explore this area, from the Karakol town at the eastern end of the Issyk-Kul Lake. They also explore one of the world's biggest glaciers called as the Enylchek glacier and the enigmatic Merzbacher's Lake, which disappeared once a year, but then refilled completely. Because of that, many years scientists and explorers asked themselves whether it is existed at all - some of them mentioned it was on the maps and in their descriptions, some stated it did not exist depending on the time of the year and the level of water.
The Tien-Shan mountain range is a very wealthy area and offers diverse kinds of mountainous landscapes, starting with green and fertile high-altitude pastures and lower situated valleys with woods to the sandy and rocky mountains and valleys and rocky which are snow-covered in the high- promotion mountain regions. There are a very famous mountain lakes: the biggest is the Issyk-Kul lake in the country, which is used mainly for beach-holidays, and amazingly beautiful surroundings of the Son-Kul lake which took place on the altitude of about 3000m above sea level, and the Sary-Chelek lake which is located at the elevation of about 1900 m above sea level (see also the List of main touristic places / Son-Kul ; Sary-Chelek)
The beautiful mountain range appeals many wild nature fans because of its fauna: the Marco-Polo sheep and the snow leopards who live in the area, and such birds as eagles, falcons and vultures. You could see seagulls on the altitude of 3000m and find rare species everywhere around the country.
In the south-west, the Tien-Shan mountains are split into two parts and embed in their middle the Ferghana-valley. This lowland is situated for its biggest part in Uzbekistan , but the east limits also reach into Kyrgyz territory. It is famous mainly for its fertility and rich, juicy and fresh choice of fruits and vegetables. In this part of Kyrgyzstan population is pretty dense, and also the second-biggest town of the country is situated here: Osh , with about 300.000 inhabitants.
The southern part of the country is stretched by the Pamir mountainous range, which established the borders of Kyrgyzstan with Tadjikistan and China. There is a famous peak: the Lenin's Peak (7134m), which is popular among calpinists from all over the world, because its technically not too difficult ascent.
