Burana Tower

There was a flourishing settlement on the Great Silk Way - Balasagun. Many traders used to come to that place to sell their good and spend a night. Burana Tower was built in 11 century there. The Tower  is 24 meters high now. At that time it was 45 meters high but because of the earthquake in 15 century have of it collapsed. This tower was used as a sign for travelers and traders, as a watching tower and as a place for calling local people for a pray. After the earthquake in the 15 century people were terrified to stay in the city. They thought that God did not want them to live there. As a result inhabitants ran away in a hurry and did not take the majority of their belongings. Our archeologists found many artifacts there and you can see some of them in a local museum. The other part of artifacts was taken to Russia in Soviet time. The houses at the site of that medieval settlement were constructed of clay. They melt because of time. Now you can see only the tower and a hill nearby that is supposed to be the khan's palace.

There you will see the collection of Balbals. The word "balabal" means "a stone warrior". In the 7 century people used to make them for honored dead warriors. They were found in different places of Kyrgyzstan and taken on the territory of the Burana Museum in order to save them for future generation.

Nearby you will see ancient petroglyphs, the stone carvings. Some of them are dated 8 century B.C. They also were taken to the Balasagun city to be shown for tourists and travelers.
